Kawasaki City Fair – a celebration of a city and its cultural revival.

This month wagumi will be hosting a selection of products from some of Kawasaki’s most exciting makers all of which embody the cultural renaissance of the city.

Now Field

Kawasaki is not somewhere traditionally known for its beauty and artisanal culture. With its heavy industry and rough image, it has long lived in the gritty shadow of Tokyo. But that is very much in the past and Kawasaki City Fair is all about introducing a very different reality. A city where the focus is now on building a diverse and beautiful future which is both kind to the environment and to all its citizens.

This month long celebration officially launched on November 23rd with a special appearance by London based Japanese illustrator and print maker Takako Copeland who has been commissioned to create a unique design for wagumi’s shop window. And for this, she will use one of the products featured, the world renowned Kitpas crayons.  With their famously soft buttery texture, these award-winning non-toxic crayons are perfect for artists of all ages.

As well as Kitpas, wagumi will be hosting Sano Design, a company which is dedicated to the creation of the beautiful from recycled materials as seen in the featured reshibo vase, a stunning example of artistry created from scrap metal and reclaimed wood.

Alongside that, will be Takara Yojo – a giant of the Japanese construction industry but now famous for its high quality soap that is both kind to the skin and to the environment.

And it’s that eco friendly ethos which is shared by all of these Kawasaki products as expressed by Riot of Colours which has dedicated itself to the mission of contributing to the cleanup of the earth’s ocean life with its stunning tote bags all created from marine plastic waste.

For each one of these makers, utility and functionality are as important as beauty and style while never sacrificing the needs of the environment at any stage. None more so than with Now Field’s food smoker which offers every kitchen not only a whole new taste dimension but an essential piece of equipment that is both stylish and environmentally friendly.

wagumi  welcomes the opportunity to host this wonderful selection of products that all embody the theme at the very heart of the Kawasaki City Fair: a place that is “kind to people and to the earth”.

As director at wagumi, Ryoko Mutasono said, “We are so happy to be working with Kawasaki City and introducing these beautiful products to the UK. Especially considering how compared with other regions in Japan, Kawasaki is not always naturally thought of as a place for design and artistry. But this is a great opportunity to celebrate a whole new future for the city and its amazing artisanal rebirth. We at wagumi are all about offering unique products beautiful crafted by interesting makers and these are all perfect examples of our ethos.”
