A Look at Stockholm Design Week 2024

Stockholm Design Week returned this week for its 22nd edition, featuring exhibitions, installations, open studios, and talks spanning seven days. Here are some highlights that caught our eye:

The Museum of Masonite - Folkform
Stockholm-based studio Folkform presented "The Museum of Masonite," showcasing a unique selection of furniture pieces made using the last hardboards produced at a Masonite factory in Rundvik, Sweden. Through the studio’s 15-year collaboration with the now-closed factory, the exhibition examines how design can re-connect consumers with industry, craft, and local traditions.

Mat Seating - Normann Copenhagen
Marking over three decades of plant fibre research by design duo Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen, this collection presents chairs and stools made from hemp stems and eelgrass, demonstrating the exciting potential of bio-based manufacturing as an alternative to injection-moulded plastic production.

Wekino With
South Korean brand Wekino made its international debut by presenting a collaboration with Stockholm's Note Design Studio. This playful collection features worm-like book holders, colourful mirrors, and other quirky pieces.

Play - Iittala
Marking “a new era” for Iittala's 142nd anniversary, Play, the first collection designed by their new creative director, Janni Vepsäläinen, combines new designs with fresh reimaginings of familiar classics, such as Alvar Aalto’s glass vase, now available in a light lilac.

FOUNDATION OF JOY
Auction house Bukowskis challenged Fredrik Paulsen to create 33 objects in 33 days. The resulting collection is full of playful furniture pieces, including chairs, benches, shelves, and tables made from standardized aluminium extrusions and handcrafted elements.
