Ondarreta talks: José Manuel Ferrero of Estudi{H}ac X Ondarreta

‘Ondarreta talks’ is a new series of industry-related talks and networking events hosted by Spanish furniture manufacturer Ondarreta.

The series is an opportunity to welcome a vibrant mix of design professionals, including architects, specifiers, and designers, to Ondarreta’s Clerkenwell showroom at Basque Living London. Clerkenwell is home to a plethora of architects and creative businesses, making it one of the world’s most important and unique design hubs. Ondarreta is proud to be a part of this dynamic community—through its new talks series, the brand seeks to contribute to a progressive discourse on design.

The series starts on 12th May 2022 with a conversation between José Manuel Ferrero, Creative Director of Spanish design atelier Estudi{H}ac, and Wouter Allaert of Ondarreta: the pair will discuss Estudi{H}ac’s creative process behind designing Ondarreta’s bestselling Hari seating collection, including some of the challenges they encountered and working with recycled materials. The conversation will be hosted by Oli Stratford, Editor-in-Chief of Disegno magazine. Hari is a new collection of chairs, stools, and lounge pieces, created with an industrial touch inspired by textile looms, and a subtle, elegant feel inspired by delicate sewing thread (‘Hari’ means ‘thread’ in Basque). The collection’s different combinations of seats and backrests, soft curves and tubular frames, provide Hari with a wonderfully characterful design and timeless appeal. Available in a combination of materials, including wood, fabric, steel, polypropylene, and recycled polypropylene, Hari is a visually expressive collection of seats that will fit perfectly with any space.

Recycled materials

Ondarreta has recently launched three new materials for the Hari chair and stool, made using recycled compounds. The new ‘Re-wood Caramel’ and ‘Re-wood White’ finishes blend waste from the wood-production process. A black finish is made with recycled polypropylene that incorporates post-industrial polymers and recycled material produced from bottle caps. The use of these new compounds is part of Ondarreta’s drive towards sustainability—their application reduces a reliance on virgin fossil materials as well as the amount of waste generated during production.

In 2021, Hari Re-wood polypropylene received GOLD in the “Excellent Product Design – Eco Design” category of the German Design Awards. The jury agreed that the Hari chair’s new polypropylene finish, designed by Estudi{h}ac, uses a production process that increasingly cares for the environment.
