SCP: Ways of Sitting | Milan Design Week 2022

For the 60th Anniversary edition of the Milan Salone del Mobile, SCP are pleased to present an exhibition of new designs situated within the beautiful main cloisters of the San Simpliciano basilica, one of the Padiglione Brera locations, and as part of Milan’s Brera Design District and the Fuorisalone.

Puffer armchair and sofa by Philippe Malouin

After an extended break from exhibiting in Milan, SCP returns with a new energy for the unique and the decorative, and as one of the leading specialist sustainable upholstery makers in the UK. 2022 sees the launch of new designs from Philippe Malouin, Matthew Hilton and Wilkinson & Rivera, alongside a range of specially commissioned hand-made accessories from Floris Wubben, Jochen Holz and Reiko Kaneko. SCP are also showing a selection of their finest pieces from the 2021 & 2020 collections, featuring designs from Ilse Crawford & Oscar Peña, Philippe Malouin, Matthew Hilton, Sarah Kay and Terence Woodgate.

SCP is a British furniture manufacturer based in London, with a specialist sustainable upholstery factory in the east of England. Led by the British modern furniture pioneer Sheridan Coakley, SCP was one of the first companies to exhibit British designed and made furniture in the Contemporary Design Hall at Milan Salone del Mobile in 1986, and has helped launch the careers of a number of significant designers of the era.

In 2022, SCP are delighted to be returning to Milan during Salone Del Mobile, and welcome all the conversations, laughter and conviviality that the visit will bring. For this special occasion, SCP are blending together brand new designs with a selection of pieces from the last two years, in a celebration of all that is practical, beautiful, at times ornate, and fundamentally well-made.

New Designs | 2022

Ewelina recliner by Matthew Hilton
A reclining armchair for a new generation that eschews the idea of formality.

Camp armchair by Philippe Malouin
A refined angular design with a solid wood frame that evokes the spirit of classic modernist pieces. It cleverly utilises tensile fabric to support the upholstered sections, providing an enveloping kind of comfort.

Group sectional seating system by Philippe Malouin
A sectional seating version of a design that use primary shapes in a concise way to form the base, back and seat of each piece.

Coffee table by Wilkinson & Rivera
A solid wood coffee table in their signature decorative style.

2021 Collection

Puffer armchair and sofa by Philippe Malouin
An oversized armchair and sofa design made in fully sustainable materials that uses joinable feather pocket sections to create a resplendent kind of comfort.

Bruno armchair by Ilse Crawford & Oscar Peña
An open-sided armchair designed to accommodate new gestures and a different language of sitting. Upholstered in sustainable materials with a European oak frame.

Grove dining table by Matthew Hilton
A wooden dining table of poise and stature that is pared down to essential elements, with cylindrical legs and a top with gently curved edges.

On Edge side table by Terence Woodgate
A large side table with a sculptural aesthetic that contrasts a perceptible heaviness with a geometry that creates minimal contact with the surface it sits on.

Left & Right side tables by Ilse Crawford & Oscar Peña
A pair of small characterful side tables made in two different ways, both with hand-drawn circular tops. They are designed to capture the spirit and magic of Japanese joinery and to appear more hand-made than machine made.

Commissions

Studio Floris Wubben
Founded in Amsterdam in 2009, Studio Floris Wubben is a design studio that produces experimental ceramics and objects that seek to push the boundaries of function and sculpture.

Jochen Holz
Jochen Holz transforms prefabricated glass tubes into one-off glassware pieces using the lampworking technique. Glass is melted over a torch and gently blown, then shaped and fused together, creating a beautiful body of work that is both spontaneous and precise.

Reiko Kaneko
A long-standing SCP collaborator, Reiko Kaneko spent her childhood in Japan. The country hasn’t only been an inspiration for the elegant simplicity to which she strives, but the key to her appreciation of craftsmanship. Reiko works from her workshop in Stoke-on-Trent as well as her studio in London, where she crafts one-off pieces and limited-edition ceramics.
